I wrote Driller as an undergraduate at the University of British Columbia's MMPE Dept as a method of teaching non-mining type people about some of the issues and concepts that are dear to the heart of us rock-bashers. Even at the earliest prototype stages, Driller was tested in classrooms to make certain that it was fun and that the "target audience" would play it.
